FAQ

What is your Open House?

Our Open House is a twice-weekly tour (Thursdays at 6pm and Saturdays at 11am) where we invite the public into our space to showcase the building, tools, space, community, and general offerings the Makerspace has. The Open House is a guided tour that covers what membership gets you, what it means to be a member, the different areas and tools we provide, the classes we offer, and general safety information. Attending a tour is a requirement for joining.

How do I become a member?

There are four steps to becoming a member at Rochester Makerspace:

  1. Attend an Open House. They happen twice a week, 6pm on Thursdays and 11am on Saturdays.
  2. Sign our waiver (available at the Open House).
  3. Fill out a membership application packet (available at the Open House).
  4. Pay your membership dues. See more at becoming a member.
How long is a membership?

Memberships are pay-as-you-go. As long as you are actively paying, you retain your membership. When you stop paying, your access will be withdrawn. There are no minimum time commitments or cancellation fees.

How much is it to cancel?

$0. There is no cancellation fee.

How do I cancel my membership?

Contact the front office (office@rocmakers.org) and let the staff know about your cancellation request. You will be asked to return your key fob and stop your payment if it’s subscription based. Please note all staff are part-time and there may be 48 hour delay in a response. If a charge was made after your cancellation you will be reimbursed.

Can I get a refund of my membership?

Memberships are pay-as-you-go, and we do not offer refunds after a payment is made. You can cancel anytime for no fee by stopping payment. If you want to stop payment, you will need to cancel your subscription service (we do not have access to your paypal account). Pre-paid memberships (six months, one year) are offered at a discount to help us forecast membership income. Because of this, they also are not refundable.

Do you have staff?

We have some staff, and they are all part-time. Our public facing staff consists of our Executive Director (president@rocmakers.org), Office Manager (office@rocmakers.org), Program Manager (education@rocmakers.org), and Facilities Manager (operations@rocmakers.org).

The Open House tour covers the roles of the staff, what it means to be a member, and you will be getting involved at the space.

Generally speaking, yes. If materials are part of an intro course they will be supplied at no charge to you. Some classes provide materials and may charge you for them (you’ll pay upfront so you know the cost). As you’ll be working on your own projects, you’ll be supplying yourself with your own materials. Yes. Please contact the Executive Director at president@rocmakers.org with the details of what you have. We do provide tax receipts for donations. The Executive Director will work with you on a valuation of what you have.

Classes FAQ

Are classes open to the public?

No, our classes are only open to members of Rochester Makerspace. To join, please review the steps on our Membership page. We would love to have you as a member!

How do I obtain a passcode?

First, join Rochester Makerspace! More information about how to join can be found on our Membership page. If you are already a member, please refer to your Welcome email for the passcode. Please search your email account, including your spam folder, before emailing office@rocmakers.org for assistance. Please note, we use different passwords for equipment reservations, so make sure you are using the correct passcode.

How do I register for a class?

Click on the Register button in the class details and complete all the fields on the Registration Form. You will receive a Confirmation Email – please save this email! Once registered, if you cannot attend a class for any reason, you must cancel your registration as soon as possible using the link found in that email! This is a Rochester Makerspace requirement due to our small class sizes, and allows the next person on the waiting list to be added to the class.

What should I do if I don’t receive a Confirmation Email?

After you register for a class or join a waitlist, you will receive a Confirmation Email. If you do not, please send an email education@rocmakers.org. It is likely there was a typo, or you did not complete the registration steps.

What if I cannot attend a class?

Use the link provided in your Confirmation Email to un-register. If you have to cancel within 24 hours of the class, we ask that you email education@rocmakers.org.

What happens if I miss a class?

If you miss a class, your absence is logged. More than one unexcused absence without properly un-registering in advance will result in your class privileges being revoked. Please refer to “What if I cannot attend a class?” above. We take this seriously because our classes are very small (usually capped at 4 students). So if your plans change, you must un-register as soon as possible to give another member the opportunity to enroll.

How do I join a waitlist?

If a class is fully enrolled, the Register button will change to a Waitlist button. Click that, and complete the registration form. You will be added to the waitlist in the order received.

If someone un-registers from the class, the first person on the waitlist will automatically be enrolled and notified via email. Please monitor your email closely! Note that our waitlists are capped at six people. If the waitlist is full, the class will read FULL and no further additions to the waitlist can be made.

Why do some classes have a fee?

While the majority of our classes are free to our members, some classes use more materials and require a fee to cover our costs. These are typically project-based classes, and in most cases students keep what they make. Refer to each class description for specifics.

If I un-register from a paid class, can I get a refund?

Yes, if you un-register at least 48 hours prior to class, we will issue a refund. Please email education@rocmakers.org after you un-register to request a refund.

Can children attend classes?

Yes, but children must be accompanied by a guardian as outlined in your member agreement. Certain areas of Makerspace also have a minimum age, as listed in the general FAQ above. Children attending classes must meet those age restrictions. Each parent and child must register as separate attendees. Please keep in mind some of our classes are long, so please consider your child’s interest and attention span before enrolling.

Can I teach at Rochester Makerspace?

We are always looking for new instructors to share their knowledge. You must be a member of Rochester Makerspace to teach here. This is to ensure all instructors have the proper safety training, and access to our space and resources. We look for passionate, reliable individuals to teach for us, and preferably all potential instructors can provide at least one other member as a reference.

We also periodically invite guest lecturers do group presentations for our members. This is a great way for you to share a hobby or passion, and a way for us to gauge interest among our membership in various topics. You do not need to be a member to be a guest lecturer.

If you are interested in either option, please email education@rocmakers.org. We assess every proposal on a case-by-case basis.
